Beach Vacay 2016: A Summary

Another Summer has come and gone and so has our annual beach to Rehoboth, DE. This time around, however, I can’t say that it was as good a time as last year.

It started auspicious enough, with our stop at Hopkins Creamery for probably the best ice cream we’ve ever had. But from then on it kinda went downhill from there.

Once we arrived in the town, our tradition has always been to knock out an early dinner at our favorite Mexican joint called Dos Locos. Well, we realized too late that Christopher had already been cooped up in the car seat for 3 1/2 hours and he wasn’t having it. As soon as the food arrived, we asked for the check and headed to our townhouse.

Being a cheapskate at heart, I figure I could save a few bucks by renting a cheaper unit away from the beach by the highway. As one of my clients recently told me, “you get what you pay for.” Although the rental was nicely decorated, it was odd having the owner’s belongings like clothes, shoes, and food in the closet, dresser, and the fridge. Not only that, the townhouse was narrow and dark, which did not help with my grumpiness. But, the kicker was our unexpected roommates: a whole colony of ants that shared our kitchen, couch, and beds.

Moreover, Mother Nature was not all that cooperative for most of the 10 days we were there. When it was not raining, it was cloudy; when it was not cloudy, it was cool; and when it was not cloudy, it was windy. I would say we only had one ideal beach day which was on Friday.

None of that seemed to bother Mr. Man, who had the amazing, mind-blowing experience of visiting an arcade, complete with skee-ball and “bop-the-frog”. So all he cared about was that beach arcade on the boardwalk, and whether or not it was closed.

So, it wasn’t a total loss at the beach this year. We even found few food joints that we’ll be going back to in the future like the Pickled Pig, Royal Treat, and Green Man.

All in all, we can chalk up this trip up to the perfect storm of ants, rain, and my grumpiness. Perhaps we will laugh all about it in the future over a couple of cold brewskis.

Our only good beach day!
Note to self…next year’s rental criteria: airy, roomy, walking distance to the beach, and NO ANTS!
