Another Bet With GINGERoni

Back last winter, I made a six-pack ab bet with Will, aka Gingeroni, which to my utter dismay, I lost. Well, a new bet has been made between Beast from the East and the male version of Annie. What is that bet? Another 50 big George Washingtons were laid on the line. This time the bet is on him; he needs to bench 300 lbs in 90 days–judgement day: Feb 17, 2016. I don’t think that can be accomplished in 3 months but he did get a book by Vladimir Zatsiosky, the famed Penn State strength researcher so…
In my glorious days of bodybuilding/powerlifting, my goals were to bench 300 and squat 400 lbs. The talk back then was that if you can bench 100 lbs over your bodyweight that was big but if you can double bodyweight bench well that was world-class. The crazy thing is that I put my body through a wringer to get those numbers. Was it worth it? I don’t think so because I suffered so many injuries from that type of training–for instance, I don’t have much cushion left on my lower back (L5/S1) and the left knee, and both of my elbows are shot. To the make the matters worse, I don’t remember a day when I was not sore from the constant grind of training.

When I turned 38, Father Time finally caught up to me. That’s when I began to rethink how to train myself as well my clients. Although injuries suck, I have to say I am much better at my job because of it. Currently, I do mostly bodyweight training, which I think is harder and more challenging but also more rewarding. I can honestly say I am so much healthier and happier now versus then. Not only that, the bodyweight training has made me much more balanced, mobile/flexible, and physically capable. I just feel more in-tune with my body and not that sore. I just don’t have the desire to look like the Michelin Man anymore.

Anyway, my hope is that in three month I will be $50 dollars richer–I need all the cash I can get between my grubby little fingers; we are planning to buy a house for Mr. Man soon.

Stay tuned, I will keep you posted.
