They say that it takes a decade to master a topic and another 5 years after that to make it your own. Although I feel like I have a good sense of competency, I am far from mastering all that is out there in the training universe. Socrates once said, “the more you learn, the more you realize how little you do know.”
When I finished grad school a few years ago, I thought about continuing on in the field of nutrition, especially performance nutrition. In exploring what is out there in field of health and nutrition, I came across a biomedical researcher named Rhonda Patrick. Patrick’s field of expertise lies in aging, cancer, and nutrition. She tackles optimizing health on a cellular level and the interplay of genes and apoptosis (cell death). The question that she tries to answer in her research is: how we can hone our nutrition, diet, and lifestyle choices to enhance our cellular functions?
The latest research she has brought to forefront is the role of vitamin D, fish oil, and gut bacteria and its relationship with brain function, mood/depression, immunity, and obesity. According to Patrick, Vitamin D, for example, is critical to about 9000 genes we hold in our body. In fact, over 50% of the population is deficient in this vitamin. And thus as I’ve gotten little older and stopped feeling like Superman, I am making the connection that I need to take Patrick’s advise and optimize my health.
